Our Story

In 2018, Libby Mohn and Oliver Hawkes founded WFU’s Ocean and Marine Conservation Club to unite students who recognized a missing opportunity to instill awareness in the Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community about today’s pressing ocean issues.

With past semesters focused on ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and overfishing, the OMCC is driven to make a difference in the Wake Forest community.

Speaker Series

To continue raising awareness and connect students even throughout social distancing measures, OMCC decided to go forth with hosting a biweekly speaker series on Zoom.

Meet Our Team

Hannah Mo

President

I am excited to represent an amazing group of people this semester as the president of OMCC. Ever since I started surfing, I’ve become aware of how we pollute our oceans and how important it is to live sustainably. In OMCC I saw the opportunity to spread awareness on a small scale and am looking forward to creating a more sustainable environment bit by bit.

Sam Schwartz

Vice President

I joined the OMCC because I have always had a passion for the ocean and drive to learn more about it. As someone who grew up in a landlocked state, and didn’t get to see the ocean often growing up, the ocean holds a special place in my heart. I’m so excited to be the Vice President and look forward to helping the Wake Forest community recognize how much of an impact the ocean has on our daily lives and how we as an individual and a community can work together to protect it.

Rosie Eykyn

Public Relations Chair

I love OMCC because it is a place where students from varying backgrounds come together with a common interest and passion for the ocean and marine life.  I am thrilled to have space and community within OMCC to discuss ocean-related topics and work together as a team to implement conservation initiatives on campus.  The ocean is vital to our planet and sustaining life on Earth, and therefore it is ever more important that we work together to raise awareness and combat the damage anthropogenic activities have caused to marine life!

Amanda Gage

Secretary

I joined OMCC because I am very passionate about sustainability. After spending all my summers at the beach, I realized how important it was to protect our oceans. I love the people in OMCC and it really feels like a little family. It’s so nice to be surrounded by people who all share a similar passion. I’m super excited about earth month this year and all the future fundraisers.

Cameron Munley

Outgoing Outreach Chair

I joined the OMCC because I love the ocean, it is highly likely I’ll spend the rest of my life studying it. From scuba to kayaking being in the water is one of my favorite things! I love the OMCC because I have the opportunity to chat and appreciate the ocean with other people that care about it too, I think that is pretty special!

Shreyas Bhasin

Incoming Outreach Chair

I joined OMCC because I’ve loved the ocean since I was a little kid. I’ve seen some of the coolest things underwater, from vast landscapes of coral to the most majestic marine animals, such as whale sharks and sea turtles. I have also witnessed the steady decline in the health and presence of marine ecosystems over the years, and I wanted to inspire myself and others to learn about how important the ocean is and what we can do to help save it.

Incoming Outreach Chair

I joined OMCC because I love adventure, ocean, and sustainability, and working hard to preserve it! OMCC is a wonderful organization where you can hang with people who have the same passion and explore the confluence of environmental protection together. Can't wait to start an adventure with OMCC!
